Acarbose
(GlucobayŽ)
Acarbose (GlucobayŽ) is used in the treatment of
diabetes because it helps control blood sugar levels by slowing down the
digestion of carbohydrates (simple and complex starches/ sugars) from the diet.
In this way it reduces the abnormally high blood sugar levels that occur after
each meal.
Sear's described the four pillars of pro-aging
as
(1) Excess insulin
(2) Excess glucose
(3) Excess cortisol
(4) Excess free-radicals.
This theory is expounded in Dr. Ward Dean and Professor Vladimir Dilman's book Neuroendocrine
Theory of Aging.
This has been why Dr. Dean is prescribing Metformin
to nearly all his patients over the age of 45, (Metformin is also is used to
treat type-2 diabetes) in order to make the receptors more sensitive to insulin.
We all become diabetic with age (because the parameters for testing are altered
according to chronological age), and diabetes can be viewed as an accelerated
aging.
GlucobayŽ prevents sugar spikes at the end of a
meal and also helps stabilize sugar levels throughout the day. This has
important implications for aging, as it can help control energy and mood levels
that are directly linked to sugar levels. Furthermore, because one is more
likely to feel sated, GlucobayŽ can act as a powerful appetite suppressant and
therefore aids in a diet. Dr. Dean is now recommending the use of Metformin and
GlucobayŽ (acarbose) for virtually all his patients over the age of 45.
Do not use GlucobayŽ if you have any liver or
kidney conditions. Avoid use if you suffer from intestinal, inflammation or
ulceration disorders and seek the advice of your physician before use if you are
diabetic.
GlucobayŽ doses for anti-aging/ appetite
suppression are 1 tablet (50mg each) once, twice or three times daily. The
tablets should be chewed and swallowed prior to a meal or with the first
mouthful of food.
Side effects of flatulence, diarrhea, and
abdominal pain have been noted in rare cases with initial use. If this
occurs reduce (or stop) the dosage and gradually increase and these problems
should disappear.
