Biostim is the first non-specific immunotherapy of bacteria origin, which can be
taken not only by mouth, but also on a daily basis. By reactivating the immune
system, Biostim protects against experimental bacteria or viral infections.

Children- Preventative treatment of chronic recurring respiratory infections (of
at least 2 years duration or following a tonsillectomy). Directions- The plan of
treatment of three 8 day cycles with three week intervals between each cycle.
The dosage is 2 tablets per day during the first cycle, and 1 tablet per day
during the second and third cycles.
A. Take 2 Biostim tablets per day for 8 days (total of 16 tablets) Three week

B. Take 1 Biostim tablet per day for 8 days (total of 8 tablets) Three week
interruption
C. Take 1 Biostim tablet per day for 8 days (total of 8 tablets) The tablets are
to be swallowed whole without chewing them, preferably in the morning and on an
empty stomach.
Contraindications- - Biostim is not to be taken in the case of autoimmune
illness. - It should not be given to children of less than a year old. -
Although embryotoxic or teratogenic effects have not been seen in animal
experimentation, it's use is not recommended during pregnancy.
Warnings- Follow your physician's advice rigorously. Prolonged use of this
product is not recommended. Keep out of the reach of children.

RU 41740 (trade name Biostim), a
glycoprotein extract from K. pneumoniae Ksub 2Osub 1 strain, is an
immunomodulating compound which has been shown to reduce infectious
episodes in patients prone to recurrent infections. Data from
preliminary experiments suggest that RU 41740 may affect several
target cells, including T cells, B cells or macrophages. In the
present report we show that RU 41740 can trigger mouse macrophages and
human adherent mononuclear cells to produce interleukin 1 activity.
Indeed, supernatants from mouse peritoneal adherent cells and human
monocytes incubated in presence of RU 41740, can stimulate
blastogenesis in thymocytes from C3H/HeJ mice. The data suggest that
the immunomodulating effect of RU 41740 could be related to its
ability to induce interleukin 1 production.

In both adults and children RU 41740 (trade name Biostim),
exerts an immunomodulating effect and prevents recurrent respiratory infections.
Patients with such infections frequently consult for acute episodes, and it was
deemed necessary to evaluate the safety of the drug given concomitantly with
antibiotic in acute infections. Three double-blind, drug versus placebo studies
were conducted in fragile institutionalized or hospitalized patients.
Antibiotics were administered simultaneously with RU 41740 in one group and with
a placebo in another group. The studies performed by Albarede and Ollivier
showed that in acute respiratory infections RU 41740 was well tolerated and
resulted in a more rapid improvement of severity score. Grassi et al. studied
chronic bronchitis patients admitted for acute infectious episodes. RU 41740
produced a more rapid improvement in the most severely ill patients, and it was
well tolerated. It is concluded that RU 41740 can be initiated safely in acute
episodes occurring in subjects with recurrent respiratory infections, and that
it results in a faster improvement of clinical symptoms.
